In 2020, State Theatre New Jersey embarked on extensive renovations to its nearly 100-year-old historic building, funded through the Next Stage Campaign, the theater’s largest capital campaign in its history.
Improvements were focused on three fundamental initiatives: Accessibility and Safety, Audience & Artist Experience, and Operational Efficiency. Renovations were completed in October 2021, in time for the theater’s 100th anniversary. Walk through the completed renovations with this 360˚ tour of the new State Theatre building! State Theatre New Jersey Auditorium
Renowned for its acoustics, the 1,811-seat theater is perfectly suited for all types of events, from large Broadway musicals and concerts to comedy nights, dance performances, and family programming. The auditorium's interior was renovated in 2004 to return the State Theatre, once a vaudeville and silent movie palace, to the splendor of its 1921 opening and original design by internationally-renowned architect Thomas W. Lamb. The restored elements included bringing back the original paint colors, decorative trim style, and other signature details. The interior restoration also included the addition of a grand chandelier with 1600 fine-cut Austrian crystals.
State Theatre New Jersey Studio
Renovated as part of our Next Stage Campaign, this multipurpose Studio is great for community events as well as intimate performances. The capacity for the Studio is 150-200.
Heldrich Room
This spacious second-floor space, beautifully restored in 2004, serves as the second-floor lobby during mainstage performances but can also be used for community events.
Donor Lounge
Located on the second floor of the State Theatre, the Donor Lounge is a special VIP area for STNJ donors at the President's Council level and above. Decorated in an Art Deco style, the lounge provides guests with a full bar, coat room, private bathrooms, and an exclusive VIP entrance.
